when i was in high school, senior year, my best friend gave me a cd with their personal "best of" the Mountain Goats. they named it "Baaa!" and I kept it in my car, listening to it nonstop for years. this was the soundtrack to my freshman year of college, as i began questioning my sexuality and overall identity, and it inspired me to try to make music on my own again. so I started making terrible recordings of myself into my laptop in the dorm stairwells and bathroom and generally being a nuisance. and whenever i had the dark thoughts about life and feeling depressed, it was the soundtrack that kept me going.

familiar story right? i think that's basically everyone's first experience with the mountain goats, and so this is less my tribute to the band as it is a tribute to when you were first introduced to their music and that feeling of hope and change.

I spent only 3 years of my life in Oklahoma but...those were the years when puberty started to hit and I started to realize I wasn't "normal". And...that was a pretty scary place to be. With the news of Gov Stitt's gross misuse of authority to halt OU's youth gender clinic and the amazing demonstrations from the kids in Norman, I realized that those were the kids I needed to help - the kids who are where I was 25 years ago.
